Local Haunts run - 5th September 2019
Nice day out with the club today, coffee in Nanteuil en vallée, drive through the country lanes to a historic church in Chenon, then a picnic by the riverside in Verteuil sur Charente. West Coast Wine and Water Trip - 17-20 June 2019
The West Coast Wine & Water trip took place on the 17-20 of June, we all meet up at The Quai Fleurie at St Jean next to the lake From here Mike lead us out through the old town and took the scenic route down to Royan where we took the ferry across the Girande. On our arrival in the Medoc we visited the Phare de Grave to take in the spectacular views and an opportunity to visit the lighthouse museum there before booking into the Hotel des Pins, at Soulac-sur-Mer where we were based for 3 nights
On the itinerary of the second day leveraging Liz's local knowledge she lead us on a journey through some of the most famous vineyards of the area (and the world). The itinerary included a visit to the famous Bages Village and lunch at the Café LAVINAL In the afternoon we continued through the vineyards to a visit the Château Brane Cantenac, where we took the opportunity for a Grand Cru dégustation. Then a leisurely drive back to the hotel.
For day 3 its was a trip down the coast, with a visit to the lakes and beaches of the area, with a stop at one of the coastal towns for a spot of seafood for lunch, again returning through the costal pine forests to the hotel.
For our final day, after leaving the hotel, we all drove back down the route des vin to Lamarque where we took the ferry across to Blay and our final stop of the trip at the Chateau Marquis de Vauban. Here after a cold Clairette under the giant Magnolia we enjoyed a "winemaker's lunch" in the cellars with their wine along with a tour of the vineyard, the winery and the Château
We were invited to park our cars together in front of the Château so ended up with a nice souvenir of our trip to remember it by.

THE CREAM TEA RUN - 16th May 2019
Great north run - 2nd may 2019
Our second "pick up" run of the year this time to the north of our area to sample the menu at auxpetitsoignons at Champagne-Saint Hilaire.
After starting off in Ecuras it then meandered 100km through the countryside via St Sornin, Taponnat Cellefrouin, Champagne Mouton and Civray enjoying the open roads and picking up cars on the way.
Unfortunately Mike's MGB on arrival at the restaurant decided it no longer needed a clutch... however following a break for lunch and with supporting club escorts clearing the route after an almost trouble-free, clutch-free run it found a suitable resting place until the appropriate parts arrive..

RUN to Brantome Horse Sanctuary for Classic Car day - 29th July 2018
a few shots from the Brantome run last week....curtesy of Paul Broom
Picnic in the woods - Army Bash - 12 July 2018
A good time was had by all at Brad and Jeannine's picnic BBQ in the woods, they'd put in a an amassing amount of effort with the Army camp / MASH theme...
As you can see, we had already put up the tents, pleased to say they were still standing after the storms and hailstones. We were sorry to have to postpone the BBQ for one week, but the sun came out the next week and the friends that came made it a very special day. We had army personnel, nurse hot lips Jan and Klinger to name but a few.
Thank you to John Upton for providing the music and to the friends that came.
Hope everyone enjoyed the day as much as I did. Jeannine 🌻

Rancogne – Exposition Vehicles d’Antan 1 July
One to watch - was a great day out even if it was incredibly hot
Correze Trip 7 -10 June 2018
The fun began with a picnic in the grounds of the beautiful chateau at Hautefort. All bets were on John being the last to arrive, and he did not disappoint! Following a short “comfort break” the balade began, keeping well clear of the major roads and skirting Brive le Galliard to the west passing through Auriac and Montignac then across country to Souillac and finally, via the worlds narrowest suspension bridge, over the Dordogne and finally to Carennac.
The “Hostellerie du Fenelon” quickly allocated rooms and ensured everyone was comfortable. Dinner on the first night was at the Fenelon with a choice of dishes each of which was delicious, the wine kept on coming, a lovely meal in the typically French restaurant overlooking the Dordogne.
The weather forecast didn’t look good earlier in the week so everyone was delighted when, on Friday morning, there was no rain and clearing skies. After a fantastic buffet breakfast, the first run (over the famous suspension bridge again) was to the Steam Train Museum at Martel, followed by a very picturesque run to the Grottes at Lacave, both potential venues for the folks to visit on their runs home on Sunday morning. It was market day in Souillac when we arrived there for lunch. As we settled down in Le Bellfroi restaurant we watched all of the market traders packing up for the day. Happily for Caroline, chips were on the menu. On then to Rocamadour to enjoy the delights of this famous venue. Having found parking at the foot of the town everyone decided to “climb” the hill by means of the “Petit Train” with a tonsorially challenged engine driver who could teach Jeremy Clarkson a lesson or two. On then back to Carennac with a view to enjoying the sights of the town and finding something good to eat. We quickly found out that choices were going to be limited, one restaurant was closed (the proprietor had gone off to Disneyland) the next we were told was complet but we think she didn’t like the look of us (who could blame her?), we finally settled in the Petit Auberge which most accommodating and welcoming providing a range of Cas Croute including a very large portion of chips for Caroline, and with only half an hours notice.
Saturday and the weather was even better, we headed north east to the beautiful town of Beaulieu sur Dordogne and from there following one of the most scenic riverside runs on the whole Dordogne we arrived for coffee in Argentat by the lovely harbour from which gabbares used to deliver oak down to Bordeaux for wine barrels . Apparently once the trip had been made the Gabbares were used for firewood and new ones built at Argentat, easier than trying to return the originals. On then to Collonges le Rouge, France’s very first “Beaux Village” and the home of the association, the town is built entirely from red sandstone and offers a wide range of places to eat. By this time we were all looking for shelter from the sun and for somewhere to take lunch. Next stop was the Gouffre de Padirac, one of the most dramatic and celebrated grottes in the whole of France. The route back to Carennac took us through two more Beaux Villages, Autoire, where the river Autoire cascades down a sheer cliff face for more than 30 metres and Loubressac celebrated for it’s magnificent views. The farewell dinner on Saturday night took place at the Petit Auberge on a terrace overlooking the river on a beautiful evening.
After petit dejeuner on Sunday everyone said farewell and headed off, but not before Amanda had a quick run around the brocante and made a purchase. For the first time most people put their hoods up because they feared the rain, they shouldn’t have worried, as we wended our way through the stalls lining the streets (much to the amazement of the assembled masses!) the sun came out giving us the perfect end to the perfect balade where the Correze, Lot and Dordogne meet.
with many thanks to Brian & Mary (aka Prudence Carrefor)

Cream Tea Run 17 May 2018
Just a couple of the pictures from Thursday's cream tea run. Great turn out and weather. Raised €165 for South west Childrens' Heart Circle. Oh and the scones and cream went down well!!!
I.M.E confolens, 15th December 2017
After last year's successful visit, this year the Club was invited to attend the I.M.E's Christmas Fayre. Eight cars were booked to attend this late December event - unfortunately on the day this was reduced to seven due to an immobiliser which immobilised when it shouldn't. We arrived at midday and were invited to lunch with the children. We gave out Santa hats - obtained by Brian and Mary - to the children - these went down well. After lunch Liz, on behalf of the Club, presented Mme Vidal of I.M.E. with our 2017 charity donation, and then it was time for rides. Andy and Karen had sorted out a short route and off we went. As usual the children were very enthusiastic - Mike's 1939 TB being particularly popular as was Bob and Mary's specially decorated, shiny, musical, BGT. Demand was such that we each did four or five trips - luckily Andy and Karen had brought their ZT which could take three passengers (sometimes including carers), while the rest of us were limited to one passenger. The weather was extremely variable - one run was in the pouring rain and the next in dazzling low level sunshine. All in all a very fulfilling and worthwhile day out, despite the time of year. Photo, and then a photo gallery follow:
Christmas lunch, 7th December 2017
Once again Brian and Mary organised a wonderful lunch for us at "La Cassotte". The restaurant also contributed with beautiful seasonal decorations and an excellent meal. Amongst the 40+ attendees it was great to see Colin out and about again after a tough year for both Debbie and him. The raffle raised over €200, earmarked for next years charity donation. First prize this year was a tablet (electronic type) won by Lesley and Jim and kindly donated by Tim and Caroline (who arrived in their brand new all electric BMW "Sparky" - no electric MGs yet....).There were over 30 prizes and, in the end, every couple seemed to have been somehow successful. Special thanks to Mary for all the present wrapping. A great way to end the year - of course we do still have the charity donation on the 15th. annual Quiz Night, 17th October 2017
The 3rd Annual Quiz took place at La Cassotte Restaurant in Nieuil.
After a disappointingly slow initial response from members (5 couples!) it was decided to extend the invitation to families, friends and other relatives.
On the night we had 33 participants ( 12 couple members) and 9 non-members forming 7 teams of 4 and 1 team of 5.
Introducing the evening, Quiz Master Trevor (aka. Hughie) Green, welcomed everyone explaining that the evening was not “Mastermind” or “University Challenge” but more of a Party Games Night. He complimented the teams on the inventive team names chosen this year.

After a first half of 5 rounds of varied and mixed context ranging from General Knowledge to Radio and T.V. Signature tunes, a light “assiette anglais” supper was served.
Following the supper break a further 5 rounds of assorted “posers” ranging from “True or False” to a “Who am I “ took place.
At the final count, joint winners emerged with “MG's Breed Quick” and “Hangers On” coming out winners with “Late Comers” coming a creditable second.
Most sportingly and generously, “MG's Breed Quick” ceded first place to the “Hangers On” given that they had 5 team members.
A much coveted and valuable Trophy was presented to the victors.
An equally uncoveted “wooden spoon” was presented to “Les Jolis” who gallantly held up the final league table.
Following the presentations, Dan Horan – a specially invited guest of the Club – thanked Trevor on behalf of all the participants for his hard work and organisation in providing a highly enjoyable evening.

fÊte de la cagouille, st. Claud, 30th September 2017
The early morning weather was not promising to say the least but it did not deter eight (later nine) MGs assembling at St. Claud for this annual event. Early arrivals were a bit surprised to find the town completely cordoned off with farm machinery, but CMGOC's local agent Dan was on the spot; he soon had things organised and we were able to enter the square. After coffee and brioche on the house, the weather, as had been forecast, improved in time for our ballade. The route was one that Trevor G had prepared earlier. This took in the Monument to the Resistance and National Cemetery at Chasseneuil-sur-Bonnieure, the pretty villages of Saint Mary, Cellefrouin and Beaulieu, and a bit of off roading over the Viaduc De Grand Madieu - formerly part of the Roumazieres Loubert to Ruffec metre gauge railway. Returning to St. Claud, after an excellent lunch we enjoyed the exhibits, the music and the ambiance. A big thank you to Dan and also Trevor G. for a thoroughly enjoyable day out. It was also great that UK based members David and Hilary could join us, along with their lovely, and much travelled, MGB roadster.

AngoulÊme remparts 16/17th September 2017
The Circuit Des Remparts lost its organisers this year, when a new Association took over, late in the day, to run this major event. Similarly, after several years, CMGOC had a change of coordinator. Notwithstanding all this we successfully submitted an entry. Mike has put together a film of the Saturday and Sunday which can be viewed by clicking the link opposite:

safari supper , 7th september 2017
An MGA, several B roadsters, a B GT V8 and an almost new TF assembled on the savanna (car park) next to Massignac church, for what is believed to be the first ever Club Safari Supper. After a run through the Charente countryside, which was at just the right temperature, we stopped for apéros and entrées at Trevor and Alison's in La Brousse (16110). We tucked into some delicious charcuterie and indeed foie gras, accompanied by suitable drinks. All too soon it was time to start our engines again - next stop was Amanda and Paul's Oak Tree Gites near Ecuras (16220) for our main course of delectable duck, beautifully prepared and presented (quote from "Dine With Me??") by Amanda and her sister. Just as some of the older members were considering a snooze after all this fine food, off we went for excellent desserts and digestives at Howard and Beverly's near Le Lindos (16310). After a chat and plenty of bonhomie the hosts and coordinators Paul and Amanda, were thanked for all their work. Everyone agreed that the evening was a great success. Members, suitably replete, then departed for their homes.
The format seem to fit the Club profile very well: friendship, camaraderie, cars and very good food! A 'photo gallery' follows - click on portion shown for full photo:

saint Mathieu, 3rd September 2017
Sunday 3rd September saw the club's annual attendance at the Fête Mechanic' Passion, Saint Mathieu, 87440 - across the County Line in Haute-Vienne
. We were pleased to welcome new club members Michael and Margaret and their extremely smart, LHD, low mileage, Xpower grey (I think) MGTF. We look forward to seeing them again shortly together with their impressive car (photo right). |
At the event we enjoyed the usual eclectic mixture of classic vehicles drawn to this large gathering. The Americana section was as large, in more ways than one, as usual - with its massive machines parked opposite the contrasting 2CV area. A good lunch was served (€5 only for drivers), the sun shone, drones took photos, Pratt and Whitney engines roared, and overpowered "2CVs" did stunts. And oh yes - we all wished Karen a happy birthday! Slide show follows - just for a change - can take a while to load!
Saint Saud lacoussière, 19th August 2017
A small but perfectly formed team of members met in Cussac (83) in the bar of the impressive Le Souffle Vert Hotel on a misty and not too warm Saturday morning. After a hot drink we departed to St. Saud (24) via the Châteaux at Brie (Champagne La Rivière) and Montbrun. We were accorded a warm welcome in this well kept and well organised village (or rather small town) with excellent amenities, including two hotels and a pleasant bar. We were initially asked to park at the Foyer where there was a sale of Art Deco items - later we moved to the central area. We were able to purchase from the range of excellent beverages manufacturer by Périgord Beers and some of us sampled Black Angus Steak Burgers, which were on offer. Other cars present included an extremely well prepared Powder Blue TR3A and a Primrose MGB. The atmosphere in the village was very pleasant and fête like and the locals were very interested in the cars. We didn't quite understand all the activities - for example there was a group of men and women, dressed entirely in white, who ran around blowing whistles and puffing old fashioned bellows at peoples knees. However we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this beautiful and lively village. A short photo gallery follows - click on portion shown for full photo:
Woodstock II, 18th july 2017
Following the success of last year's Teddy Bears Picnic, this year, instead of cuddly caniforms, Brad and Co. permitted their peaceful forest to be invaded by counterculturists. Brad and Co. had done a huge amount of work to prepare the site - which is deep in the heart of Woodstock Forest. Against the background of Woodstock: Music from the Original Soundtrack and More plus other music of the time, us hippies barbequed food, imbibed and tried to remember the name of the lead guitarist and singer of Ten Years After. Everyone entered into the spirit of the day by arriving suitably attired - Brad was almost impossible to distinguish from Richie Havens and Mike and Maria (and friends) were definitely '♫...going to San Francisco...♫,' or rather, I suppose, Montembœuf. The weather was hot with a bit of a breeze - no need for "no rain" chants, and, as far as the writer is aware anyway, no one circulated "brown acid" that was "specifically not too good." We all had a great time, and once again thanks to Brad and his team for all the hard work - including a bit of civil engineering, and also to Howard for the music. A couple of photos follow:
run to lac st. pardoux, 5th july 2017
We set off from the riverside carpark at Chabanais in lovely hot sunshine, and headed out to Saulgond and St Christophe, taking coffee in Mortemart (a beau village) After driving through Montrol Senard (another village of interest, perhaps a future trip?) we enjoyed some very pretty scenery and good bends in the Monts de Blond area, finishing up in Nantiat and then on to St Pardoux. Our picnic lunch was in a delightful and shady (thank goodness) spot in Site de Freaudour right next to the lake.
After lunch we drove round the lake taking in Site de Santrop and Site de Chabannes. We headed back to Chabanais via Cieux and headed again into the Monts de Blond to enjoy more scenery and bends, then driving through Montollet, Brigueuil and Saulgond. Thankfully there was a bit of respite in the shade at Chabanais before heading home. Photos follow:

Dordogne/lot three nighter, 27th - 29th june 2017
The weather forecast was not at all promising; nevertheless nine MGs, (an MGA, two MGBs, an MGB GT V8, two RV8s, an MGF, an MGF Trophy and an MGTF) and their intrepid owners assembled on Day 1 at the Pépé Lucien bar/café in medieval St Yrieix la Perche. After a coffee or two we embarked on our journey south, taking the D704. First stop was the Château de Hautefort for a picnic lunch, next was for a coffee at nearby St Agnan. The scenery changed from apple orchards to walnuts and, after Montignac, we followed the Vézère to Les Eyzies. From there we crossed the Dordogne and drove via Siorac and a drink at John and Liz's, to our destination, Villefranche du Perigord and the hotel, La Petite Auberge. After a few drinks and an excellent dinner at the hotel we turned in for the night.
Day 2 was Dordogne Day. First stop was the charming village of Besse, not far from Villefranche, where we visited the 11th century fortified church. Then via a slightly circuitous route due to pre Tour De France road works, we drove to Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, with its impressive Cathar/Plantagenet Château, and crossed the Dordogne. Our second stop was La Roque-Gageac, on the banks of the Dordogne; after this we climbed to the bastide of Domme to partake of the magnificent views and have lunch. The afternoon saw us visit the Château des Milandes, home of the 1920/30/40s entertainment superstar, activist, orphan mother and French Resistance agent, Josephine Baker. Our very informative guide showed us round the château, where we viewed, amongst other things, the impressive collection of JB's frocks, feathers and minimalist fruit themed costumes. After the tour we viewed the birds of prey show in the château's grounds. The evening was barbeque evening. Due to the weather forecast this had to be moved from Liz and John's garden, to the Foyer of the Mairie at Saint Cernin De L'Herm. - many thanks to the Maire for his assistance.
Day 3 was Lot Day. We drove to Cahors and then continued in an easterly direction along the banks of the Lot. We crossed the Lot at Bouziès on a rather rustic (or rusty?) bridge. Here we boarded our cruise boat (a hybrid electric/diesel Gabare replica) which took us as far as Saint-Cirq-La-Popie and then brought us back to Bouziès in time for lunch. The afternoon saw us return to Cahors where we visited the 14th century Valentré bridge. Somehow we managed to keep together in the Cahors traffic and left the town for Crayssac where we descended the Col De Crayssac (D9) down to the banks of the Lot. A short distance later we visited the Cahors wine estate of Château De Caïx (prop. HM Margrethe II of Denmark and the Crown Prince Henrik). We were given an informative tour of the beautiful grounds, with their views of the river, and also the winery. Following this we sampled the estates products and made our purchases. The journey home took us along the Lot, through Luzech and Prayssac. The evening was spent at Auberge Le Gaulois near Fontenilles where, surrounded by deer, buffalo, donkeys and the odd Emu, we ate. After dinner we were entertained by the excellent local super group Mehaye.
On Day 4 drove to the nearby 13th century Bastide of Monpazier (founded by Edward I of England) where we were able to exhibit our cars in the historic square whilst we partook of a coffee. It was then time to say our goodbyes and head for home.
Overall the weather could have been much better, but we were lucky that the rain held off sufficiently for us to enjoy the majority of our outings. The itinerary kept us busy and the camaraderie was great. Where shall we go next year???

brantôme "so British" fete - 18th june 2017
Following organiser Claude's invitation, seven cars (an MGA, 3 MGBs, an MGF, an MGTF and an RV8) participated in this annual event. As usual we were asked to be there at 9am and most of us managed it - or thereabouts. Although the day was forecast to be extremely hot it was a bit fresh first thing and we were happy to accept the offer, from Tim and Caroline, of coffee on arrival.
A mid morning run took us to the beautiful Château de Bourdeilles. We parked in the shade on the banks of the Dronne opposite the château and ventured across the bridge to the picturesque town and chateau itself. Unfortunately the writer is unaware of the return route for the run, as, due to local traffic, his group of cars became separated from those in front who knew the way. Anyway we returned to Brantôme and, as requested, did a circuit of the island town. By this time it was getting really hot and we were glad to find out that our location for lunch was in the shade near the entrance to the Grotte. Claude's helpers provided us with an excellent cold lunch - our guest at lunch was an interesting self declared Marlon Brando lookalike, driving a replica Jaguar SS 100. During dessert a strange noise echoed from the Grotte - it turned out to be a very smart Scottish pipe band warming up. The afternoon was mainly spent keeping in the shade as temperatures soared, and doing a further circuit of the town.
To summarise, a great but hot day well put together by CMGOC's Caroline and Tim. We also had the pleasure of meeting two couples interested in joining the club.

observation run and visit to braastad distillery - 8th june 2017
On a beautiful day, one MGA, three MGB roadsters, two MGB GTs and two RV8s assembled at 09h30 at the Plan D'Eau Grande Prairie car park near Angoulême - and were joined by an B GT V8 which was, unfortunately, rather late.... Garry and Anna supplied each car with documentation giving the route to be followed as well as the observation questions. Cars departed at regular intervals. The route, though extremely beautiful countryside, took in La Vigerie, St. Saturnin, St. Simeux, Vibrac, Angeac-Charente, Juac, Triac, Gondeville, St Meme Les Carriers, Chez Richon, Segonzac, Veillard and ending at Gensac La Pallue. Here we handed in our completed questionnaires and then visited La Pisciculture du Moulin. Set in a picturesque situation and fed with spring water at a constant 16C, we learnt that the Pisciculture du Moulin specialised in different types of trout and also sturgeon. At the end of the visit we participated in a caviar degustation and concluded that caviar was indeed a tasty delicacy.
After the visit we headed for Jarnac and lunch and then drove to the Braastad distillery, which is situated in Jarnac on the banks of the Charente. We were met by Richard Braastad, our charming host and tour guide. We visited the distillery, with its copper alembic stills and learnt about the process. White grapes only were used and the product was double distilled, resulting in 70% proof eau de vie. From the distillery we walked to the ageing and blending building where we saw the Limousin oak casks and vats - some bearing the names of the owners of their contents. During the ageing process we learnt that the eau de vie interacts with the oak and also evaporates at a higher rate than the water - reducing the strength to 40% over time. Due to the ageing process Richard stressed that producing cognac was a long term business.
After a visit to the distilleries museum we partook in our second degustation of the day and several of us made purchases.
We thanked Richard and proceeded to the yard where our cars were parked - here Garry and Anna announced that Bob and Mary were the winners of the Observation Run with 28 points. The questions, complete with the correct answers are available as a slide show below. It was then Garry and Anna's turn to be thanked for a really wonderful day out, enjoyed by all.

run and cream team - 10th May 2017
Under foreboding skies, eleven MGs (and two BMWs) assembled in M. E Leclerc's rather uninspiring supermarket car park at La Rouchfoucault on the Wednesday afternoon. But, despite the weather, we were treated to an inspired and thoroughly enjoyable afternoon by Amanda and Paul. It was soon apparent that Paul (or is it Amanda? Or both?) possess a level of knowledge of the Charente back roads unequalled by Google Maps and Garmin and indeed NASA. We drove past the impressive chateau at La Rouchfoucault and continued on the country roads, undaunted by the rain and showers. We made a stop at the Mairie of Eucras, and met the mayor, then some of us got temporarily lost, and just when we were ready for a cup of tea (or something stronger) we arrived at the lovely Oak Tree Gites. Here we were each treated to a sumptuous cream tea with all the trimmings, including strawberry jam and specially imported clotted cream. Amanda and Paul must of put a tremendous amount of work into the afternoon and it was greatly appreciated by all the members attending. A great afternoon despite the "hoods up" weather!

run and cricket - 29th April 2017
The organisers had to bring forward the date for this event from the 30th to the 29th, due to a miserable weather forecast for the Sunday. As a result CMGOC's attendance was limited to a small but strong delegation of four cars. The weather on the Saturday was extremely kind; following a short run we settled down outdoors for luncheon and then took the field. CMGOC somehow ended up captaining both teams - there were several sporting declarations. Eventually Bob's team ended victorious. All those attending seemed to enjoy themselves - it was a shame we only had a few members there - however the decision to change the day proved to be the right one as play on the 30th would have been impossible!
